Mesh or rod: what goes where

Staples hold the part together mechanically, but on their own they do not seal the seam or stiffen the panel. That is what filler rod and reinforcing mesh are for, and they solve different problems.

Rod

A rod of the same plastic melts and fills the groove along the crack on the visible side. It restores the material: the seam becomes watertight and flat enough to paint. A rod is essential wherever the part holds liquid: washer tanks, canisters, expansion tanks.

Mesh

Reinforcing mesh is melted into the back and works as a frame: it spreads load across an area instead of along the seam line. Use it where the part flexes or holds a mount: bumper corners, areas around broken tabs, spots where a piece broke off.

What to use when

• A straight crack in a flat surface — staples plus a rod. No mesh needed.
• A crack in a corner or near a mount — staples, mesh on the back, rod on the front.
• Broken-off piece — pull it together with corner staples, melt mesh across the whole joint, then run a rod over the top.
• A leaking tank — a rod of the same material is essential; mesh only if the crack is near a mount.

Mesh sizes

A 15×21 cm sheet covers a typical bumper corner or the area around a mount. Take the 30×60 cm sheet for frequent repairs or large areas: the mesh cuts easily with scissors.
